Nano UAV

Written by on Friday, February 8th, 2013

What flying vehicle weighs a little over a pound, fits in the palm of your hand, can provide video back to a hand-held display and can potentially save the lives of soldiers in harm’s way? Give up? It’s called a Nano Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and it’s the latest and greatest technology being developed for soldiers in close combat scenarios.   Nano, which means very small, is a derivative of the UAVs that are flying in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the larger UAVs are grabbing all the headlines today by tracking combatants and delivering weapons on insurgents, it’s the smaller UAVs that are flooding into theater to save soldier’s lives. With a small hand-held Nano UAV, soldiers can launch a device into a building for room clearance, provide intelligence prior to movement and can even provide can you buy antibiotics online uk surveillance for potential Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The Nano UAV usually weighs about one pound, is quiet for covert missions and is equipped with electro-optical cameras that provide linked video back to the operator for flight control and mission specifics. The batteries typically last between 25-30 minutes and there are plans in development to integrate the video from the Nano UAV into a helmet mounted display.

Today the Reaper and Predator are the “glory UAVs” because the video feeds are declassified and provided to media sources but the real significant contribution for soldiers with boots-on-the-ground are the smaller UAVs that are directly controlled by soldiers and Marines to immediately provide feedback to threats and intelligence. Flexible and a de-centralized control of UAVs provide the greatest impact to warfighters and Nano UAVs certainly fit the bill.
