Lockheed Martin just sealed a $24 million contract with the Air Force to upgrade simulation training systems for the C-130.

The C-130 transport aircraft, appropriately dubbed “Hercules,” is one of the most reliable and useful aircraft currently in use. The C-130 Hercules was originally intended as a troop and cargo transport, but its sturdy frame and ability to take off and land on unprepared runways made it extremely popular in the U.S. and among her allies. Since the debut of the Hercules aircraft, Lockheed Martin has spawned over 40 variants, ranging from search and rescue functions, airborne assault, scientific research support, and gunship capabilities.

In fact, the Hercules is such a reliable and consistently useful aircraft that it is the only military aircraft in history to remain in continuous production for 50 years with the country that originally ordered it. Considering this track record, it’s no surprise that the Air Force was quick to renew training programs with Lockheed Martin, ensuring that pilots for years to come would be able to operate this invaluable aircraft.

This new training program will include many of the more modern and technologically advanced systems that are becoming common throughout the U.S. military, such as infrared night-vision training and visual databases. Even as the C-130 receives upgrades to make it a more modern aircraft, prospective pilots will be learning how to master all of these state-of-the-art bells and whistles.

Despite the seemingly hefty $24 million price tag, this training contract is designed to be affordable and relatively cheap. Over 25 of America’s allies will also be able to benefit from C-130 Aircrew Training System, ensuring that we get the most bang for our buck.
